The competition brief posed the question - what makes a ‘creative city’? And what capacity does Architecture have to foster, inspire, or celebrate creativity within an urban environment? With the subject site located within inner city Adelaide, the competition sought to explore how the city could become a more creative, vibrant and innovative place to live in the future.
With the brief being left open in regards to exact function of the proposal, we sought to explore a building which first and foremost establishes a dynamic dialogue with the urban context. A series of small scale functions take place at street level creating an active perimeter to the building. By contrast, a large, singular roof space serves as an urban courtyard for all to use. The strictness of the courtyard reflects the forms of the city context, while its abstracted horizon and filtering of light and views seeks to shift one’s sense of experience beyond the immediate setting/context.
